April Talking Point: The Industry’s Darkest Secrets

The April issue of the Journal of Financial Planning features an interview with "The Mole," the CFP-certificant undercover columnist for Money magazine.

The Mole says consumers aren't always getting straight talk from their planners and that financial incentives too often cloud planners' judgment. Is he right?

The Mole thinks consumers should know what goes on behind the scenes in financial planning. What do you think? Is the Mole hurting or helping? Have your clients ever mentioned the Mole's columns?

I would agree that incentives cloud many planner's judgements. I believe working on a fee-only basis is best for the client, and fairly compensates the planner.  There would be significantly less variable annuities sold to clients, if the advisor doesn't receive a commission for selling them.
