Dear Kate,
I was unsure as to the procedure for answering the questions, so I will answer them here.
Sylvia: Getting a copy of your credit report will not adversely affect your credit score.
Claudia: Make sure that your firewall, antispyware, and anti-virus protection software is current. If you use a laptop, you should make sure that additional security software to protect you in WiFi areas are installed. WiFi is an abbreviation for Wirless Internet service. It works by sending web pages over radio waves to computers that have wireless capabilities. This does not include connecting to the internet through a cable modem. You should also find out from the college technology people what they do to protect the security of their data. Unfortunately, if they are not doing enough, there is little you can do to protect yourself from their carelessness.
Mary: If someone has had their identity stolen, I suggest they go to the website of the Federal Trade Commission
www.ftc.gov. They have much helpful information in regard to dealing with identity theft. As for small businesses, make sure that the shredding company you are using properly screens its employees and uses security measures to protect the security of the documents prior to actual shredding.
Sincerely,
Steve Weisman

On behalf of FPA, I'd again like to thank Mr. Weisman for his time. We did have a few remaining questions, and I've posted those below.
Sylvia asks: How much would running a credit report affect one's credit score?
Claudia is looking: Recommendations for avoiding identity theft at a college where enormous amounts of information are available. She continues, "Exactly what do you mean by WIFI? Does this include connection to the internet through cable modem?
Mary wants to know: What websites or immediate direction would you give to clients who have just had identify stolen? She continues, in regards to her small business that due to large volume, it is not practical to shred on site. What is your solution to bulk shredding?
